Arsenal boss against salary caps but backs meeting over FFP

Arsene Wenger says he is not in favour of wage caps in football but has reiterated his stance that Financial Fair Play should be introduced.

The chairmen of all 20 Premier League club met this week and agreed in principle to introduce the UEFA model to ensure teams break even, though salary limitations were ruled out.

FFP was a feature of Arsenal’s fiery Annual General Meeting last month with chief executive Ivan Gazidis insisting that the north Londoners will be able to compete with the world’s leading clubs in two years.

Asked about the meeting ahead of the north London derby with Tottenham, Wenger said: “I’m in favour of Financial Fair Play but not in favour of wage caps. That’s completely different.

“I believe that in every single club the problems are different and you should be able to manage your money like you want.

“You should manage inside the resources that the club produces – that’s the difference.

“I don’t believe in wage caps at all because it’s just an incitement to cheat and today, with the international rules, nobody could ever check that.”
