Arsene Wenger has warned pundits not to write off his team too quickly after Arsenal slumped to their second successive home defeat tonight.
The Gunners crashed out of the Capital One Cup after their 2-0 reverse against London rivals Chelsea – exactly a week after Borussia Dortmund triumphed at the Emirates in the Champions League.
Now Wenger’s side must regroup for another stern test on their own turf this weekend, when they face in-form Liverpool, but the Gunners boss is confident that the mini-slump can be arrested.
“We repeated a little bit by giving the first goal away,” admitted Wenger. “In these big games you give yourself a mountain to climb, especially against a team who defend well and are good on the counter-attack.
“That is giving yourself a difficult task and we did not create enough chances. But you know we will not win all the games and we have to respond well on Saturday against Liverpool.
“We have an opportunity at home and we have to turn this around. Away from home we are very solid but at home as well it is vital to win the big games.
“If you take the points we have made since January, we have made more than everybody else. It’s difficult to swallow what’s happened to us in the last week, but the mistakes aren’t so big that they can’t be corrected.
“We have to keep the basis of our game and go into the next one and get those mistakes out. We must not let it play too much on our minds, just go into the next game and play good football and be focused.
“People go too quickly to definite conclusions. After the first game against Aston Villa we were relegated and today we are in a strong position in the league.”
Arsenal fell behind in the 25th minute after Blues right-back Cesar Azpilicueta seized on a weak header by Carl Jenkinson and steered the loose ball past Lukasz Fabianski.
And the fourth round tie was effectively decided midway through the second half when Juan Mata fired past Fabianski from the edge of the box.
