20mph limit on all roads by spring

EVERY residential road in Islington will have a 20mph limit by spring next year.

Islington Council will become the first local authority in the country to introduce a blanket 20mph limit when it starts implementing the measure in the New Year.

Councillors hope the new limit will cut accidents, congestion and pollution.

Drivers will still be able to drive along all main roads at 30mph.

Money was first allocated to the scheme in February, when Green Party councillor Katie Dawson persuaded the ruling Liberal Democrats and the opposition Labour party to put aside cash for a 20mph limit in budget plans for 2009-10.

The Lib-Dems have been consulting with residents on the idea. Last week, the final consultation ended with a vote in favour of the scheme. Councillor Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's Lib-Dem executive member for environment, said: "A blanket 20mph zone is a bold step, but it's what our residents want and deserve."

No speed bumps will be installed. Drivers will be notified of the limit by signs.
