Car hits cyclist as road experts visit danger junction
OFFICIALS taken to a junction described as "Russian roulette for cyclists" received a graphic illustration of the danger when a rider was hit by a limousine before their very eyes.
Councillor George Allan had taken Transport for London experts to the junction between Penton Rise and Pentonville Road, King's Cross, where 26-year-old cyclist Rosie "Roh" Wright was killed in March. But as he tried to convince them that signs were needed, a young student on a bike was sent flying over the bonnet of a black Mercedes. The cyclist - who escaped injury - brushed himself down before telling the group that he thought signs were needed.
Councillor Allan said: "It was very shocking - and a very telling example of what is happening there. It absolutely vindicates what we have been saying about the junction. We told him who we were and why we were there and he agreed that signs were needed."
Councillor Allan is also calling for the red light at the junction to show for longer to give cyclists the chance to get in the correct lane, and for a stop line to be moved forward.
A Transport for London spokeswoman said: "TfL was saddened to learn of the death at the junction of Pentonville Road and Penton Rise in March. We are investigating a number of longer-term solutions to improve the safety of this junction, but in the meantime are implementing improvements to the signage and road markings at the junction and the approach to it. This work will be undertaken shortly.
