Waldo's top tastes

A NEW guide compiled by feline food inspectors lifts the lid on cat cuisine and rates the quality of hundreds of brands - from the "purrfect" to the downright "paw".
Brother and sister team, Rosemary and Andrew Gasson employed the help of Ms Gasson's pedigree pet Waldo as "chief inspector" and a panel of 14 other moggies to taste the various brands, and vote in the Golden Whiskers Awards for categories including best wet cat food, best dry cat food and best supermarket range.
The Good Cat Food Guide - complete with humorous illustrations and sections on taking your cat abroad, as well as "Waldo's Web", Waldo's top five feline-related websites, was the result of almost two years' work.
The authors produced their first Good Cat Food Guide in 1992, which was followed by a Good Dog Food Guide a few years later.
Ms Gasson, a property consultant, of Manor Gardens, Holloway, said: "I've always been eccentric about cats.
"Cat food is very big business now and deciding what to buy in the supermarket is mind-blowing. We are now in the 21st century and you can buy anything online, including cat food, so I decided to write another Good Cat Food Guide. There are approximately 9.6 million cats in the UK and the pet food industry is worth £695million - that's an awful lot of cat food!"
The cat food "inspection" team have given all the brands a "paws and claws" rating and details including the type of packaging, which "cat inspector" did the taste test and the package size is all included.
Ms Gasson said: "It's not that there are bad cat foods, it's just that there are so many and some are better than others."
* The Good Cat Food Guided is published by Ebury in full colour hardback, and costs £8.99.
