Radio stations won't play Zimmers record

WRINKLED rocker Alf Caretta returned to his native Islington after taking America by storm - only to find that British radio stations refuse to play the Zimmers' chart-storming single because of their age.

The snub is especially galling because the only reason the band of pensioners were formed was to prove that old people are still very much alive and kicking.

Front man Alf, 90, of Wedmore Street, Upper Holloway, said: "We can't get the radio stations to play the record. It seems that because we are so old they refuse to put it on air - even though it's a catchy little tune. They think that just because we are pensioners we can't be trendy. But we put our heart and soul into that record and it's not as if we are getting any money out of it, it's for charity. It's so mean - I just don't understand it."

Fellow Zimmers member Delores Murray, 64, of Basire Street, Islington, said: "We have tried several radio stations but the DJs responses are disgusting. They are not interested and a certain DJ said old people smell and the record is total rubbish. All of them are refusing to play it - Radio One, Capital Radio and so on. These elderly people have put so much into this country and for them to be treated like that is just awful."

But the Zimmers are fighting back with an unlikely version of the Prodigy's rave anthem Firestarter in the pipeline. The cover raises the amusing prospect of Alf Caretta prancing around with lead singer Keith Flint's trademark "devil horns" hairstyle. Alf said: "I haven't heard the track but I gather it's a bit of a tongue-twister. I am looking forward to it - even though I'm not sure I've got enough hair left for the devil haircut."

A Capital Radio spokeswoman said: "The Zimmers is not on Capital's playlist. The music Capital plays is carefully selected for our target audience and we have taken the decision not to play this particular track as it doesn't fit into the station's music proposition."

Radio One made no comment.
