A TEAM of firefighters who helped save the life of a stab victim and chased down his attacker have been hon-oured for their heroism.

The four-man crew from Holloway station, in Hornsey Road, were on their way back from a call on September 7 last year when they were flagged down by members of the public.

Wayne Sang, 33, was lying in the street having been stabbed twice by addict Julian Stephens, 34, after a chase along the middle of Seven Sisters Road, Holloway.

Firefighters Ben Dawes and Robert Summerfield applied pressure to Mr Sang's wounds and administered oxygen until the ambulance arrived.

Meanwhile crew manager Alan Flynn and firefighter Nicholas Thomas chased Stephens.

They kept themselves between Stephens and members of the public in case he struck again. They cornered him and prevented him from escaping until the police arrived.

Stephens, of Hornsey Road, Upper Holloway, was jailed for four years at Blackfriars Crown Court for wounding with intent on September 7 last year.

Donna Gellatly, also of Hornsey Road, Upper Holloway, was given a suspended sentence for perverting the course of justice after a trial heard she hid the six-inch knife in her baby's pram and tried to flee the scene.

Last week the four firefighters were presented with a special award by London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson during a ceremony hosted by broadcaster Alistair Stewart.

Crew manager Flynn said: "We found ourselves in different circumstances to those we are trained for. It was a case of 'We need to do something here'.

"The victim was badly injured and was barely conscious. Firefighters Dawes and Summerfield did a good job of rendering first aid until the ambulance turned up. I'm pleased for the crew that the brigade has acknowledged their actions."

London Fire Brigade Group Manager Peter Cowup, who nominated red watch for the award, said: "They are a credit to London Fire Brigade and the community they serve.
