ANGRY bingo lovers staged a protest to fight the closure of their treasured club.

Mecca Bingo Club in Essex Road, Islington, is expected to close in just a few weeks' time.

Its owner Rank says it cannot afford to keep it open because it will lose money when the smoking ban in public places comes into force in July.

But players are furious that the club will not been given a chance.

They protested outside the hall on Wednesday afternoon and have set up a petition calling on club bosses to reconsider.

Dolores Murray, 64, of Basire Street, Islington, said: "Five weeks notice after 34 years coming here. They've not considered us at all.

"This bingo hall is family for people. They come in and make friends. That's going to be taken away from all those elderly people."

Players say staff told them the hall will close on March 25, but Rank would not confirm a closure date to the Gazette.
