MP praise for charity
ISLINGTON North MP Jeremy Corbyn praised the work of an Islington-based charity in a debate about the children of asylum-seeking families.
Labour MP Mr Corbyn said in the House of Commons that the work of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, in Isledon Road, Finsbury Park, was "highly respected and effective".
Mr Corbyn was speaking against the enforced removal of children of asylum seeking families and described the cruelty of dumping them in a place they have only heard about from their parents.
He said: "One is faced with families who have sought asylum in this country and have been here for a considerable time. The children have grown up in this society and know nothing other than the multicultural society of inner London.
"For them suddenly to be told that they have got to go and to be taken almost forcibly away and deported to a society that they have only heard about from their parents, is cruel in the extreme."
The MP praised the contribution made by many asylum seekers to the UK economy.
Mr Corbyn, referring to the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, added: "It has developed into a highly respected and effective organisation that provides support, care and counselling for the victims of torture.
"I am very pleased that its new building and counselling centre are in my constituency. I am proud that it is located there, and of the work that it does."
He said that the advice of the foundation was that decisions to remove children should only take place after full scrutiny
of the families grounds for remaining in the UK by trained decision makers, with competent legal representation and a right of appeal.
