Does coffee cheese tempt your tastebuds?

WHEN you are thinking of the ideal accompaniment for cheese, you'd probably think of pickle or tomatoes.
Maybe if you're feeling adventurous you'd have some Wensleydale with apricots. But bosses of an Islington supermarket have decided there is a growing demand for sweet and savoury luxury cheeses and have launched a new CAPPUCCINO flavour cheese.
The cheese, which costs £7.99 a kilo, has been produced to look like a cappuccino with a creamy top layer and a darker, brown layer underneath which is more strongly flavoured.
It has just gone on sale at Morrisons in the Nag's Head, Holloway Road, Holloway.
The Gazette went to Holloway Road with samples to ask people whether the new cheese tickled their taste buds.
Tracy Willoughby, 30, a full-time mum, of Holloway Road, Holloway, said: "It's weird! I love cheese but I don't think there is a need for coffee flavour cheese. I can understand why they'd put fruit in cheese but I can't see what the connection is between cheese and coffee. Maybe if you were having a party and it was part of your buffet, then yes - but for me to buy it as an everyday thing, then no."
Helen Irvine, 30, also a full-time mum, of Holloway Road, Holloway, said: "It tastes of coffee filter - the really strong coffee - not cappuccino. I don't like it at all. It might be nice for someone if you knew they liked coffee, but I don't, so I wouldn't buy it."
Engineer John Richards, 46, of Harberton Road, Archway, said: "I think it's probably an acquired taste. The coffee flavour is coming out very strongly but I don't think I'd buy it."
The new cheese has gone on sale alongside Morrisons current "feature flavour" range which includes Leicester with green olives and sweet red peppers tapernade, extra creamy white stilton with lemon preserve and Edam with red chillies.
A Morrisons spokesman said: "Over recent years we have seen an increase in consumer demand for unusual and flavour-rich cheeses.
"We have launched cappuccino cheese as an innovative after-dinner delicacy. Its unique flavour also makes it a delicious snack for coffee and cheese-lovers alike.
