Millionaire backs church squatters

A MYSTERY millionaire has offered to buy out the church group which owns St George's Theatre - so squatters can stay there for good.

The secret benefactor has written to House On The Rock offering to buy the historic building in Tufnell Park Road, Holloway, for £1.5million.

It is believed the backer, part of a large theatre and entertainment company, stepped in after visiting the building - which was hijacked by the so-called Circle Community Group in November. The group has been holding theatre workshops and yoga and meditation sessions inside the venue. The baker has also offered to give the group up to £50,000 for refurbishments.

Circle community co-ordinator Peter Phoenix said: "This man really likes what we are doing here and thinks the building should be open for the community to use. He said he and his business partner will find the money and we will have five years to pay them back."

Kola Kareem, project manager for House on the Rock, said: "We received a fax from someone saying he was prepared to offer £1.5million.

"I threw the letter in the bin. It is not an issue for us.
