We can all save energy
I AM relieved that Islington has not had to suffer the same horrendous floods as the rest of the country. Our hearts go out to these people who have had to leave their homes. Most importantly this recent weather shows how at the mercy of the weather we are and why it is so important to tackle climate change now.
There are three things we can do locally as a borough to help. We can invest in more renewable energy sources throughout Islington. Last year we created the £3million climate change fund to do exactly that, and we have erected a series of wind turbines and will see other alternative energy sources as a result.
We can stop wasting energy with better insulation. Last year Islington spent over £21million on improving household energy efficiency. Because of our investment in this field, according to DEFRA, Islington had one of the highest improvements in Domestic Energy Efficiency in London.
The third is to green our vehicles and the way we move around the borough. That's why all Islington Council vehicles now run on alternative fuels, and we have introduced a financial incentive through green parking for residents to drive more environmentally friendly cars.
Your council is investing money right across the borough in reducing our climate footprint and being innovative in the way we use and create energy in Islington.
But what are you doing? It is not just major and costly things - at home you can recycle more, turn off TVs rather than using stand by buttons, and switch your light bulbs to low energy ones. These are little changes we can all make. If you want to improve your carbon footprint and cut your energy bills, why not call the council's energy centre on 0800 512012. - Councillor James Kempton, leader, Islington Council, Town Hall, Upper Street, N1.
