Dumping doubled since skips went
KEITH Sharp's letter ("Skips were just rubbish", Gazette, November 6) is a welcome addition to the debate about our community waste and how we choose to deal with it. But the Liberal Democrat's Parliamentary candidate for 2001 was disingenuous to suggest our letter ("Bring back the skips", Gazette, October 30) was ill-informed.
Statistics from the Environmental Agency's recent report show that fly-tipping has doubled in the last three years since the skips were discontinued. Moreover, if the current personalised service is as good as he says, why are there piles of fly-tipped waste piling up on our streets?
The reason that we raised the issue in the first place is that residents see the current policy is not working.
Perhaps if the Lib-Dems spent more time thinking about the quality of their policies, and less time and money promoting them, we would have a service that deals with the increasingly problematic issue of community waste. - Alex Smith, Gary Heather and Jessica Asato, Labour's council candidates for St George's ward, via e-mail.
