Future bright for residents

In response to the letter "End is nigh" (Gazette, November 12), PJ Leamy makes a range of incorrect points regarding Homes for Islington (HfI).

We'd like to reassure our residents that the future looks bright for them and HfI with the continuation of the excellent services we provide.

We are on course to ensure all of our homes reach decent homes standard by 2011. Furthermore, residents' satisfaction with the work we've been doing has improved year on year.

Regarding the assertions about price rigging, this is incorrect. The main contractor mentioned by PJ Leamy was procured by Islington Council nine years ago and HFI now manages this contract on their behalf. The Office of Fair Trading's report confirms our own separate contract investigation last year which found no evidence that any HfI or Islington Council contracts involved price-fixing.

HfI always seeks to get the best value for money for its residents, and for all our Decent Homes work we use a framework agreement that significantly reduces any opportunities for contractors to engage in price-fixing.

We are very proud of our achievements and the fact that the vast majority of residents welcome our efforts to improving their housing. - Eamon McGoldrick, chief executive, Homes for Islington, Highbury Crescent, N5.
