The Queen of Hoxton’s pop up WigWamBam returns for the second year in a row.

It’s a scene more fitting in the outback of a far-flung country – a bark-strewn wigwam with meats roasting over coals in the centre, a shack-style bar and crackling fire pits.

Only, you’re in the middle of Hoxton on the top of a six-storey building. Peek out through the trellis fences swathed in fairy-lights and you can see out over the city as far as Canary Wharf.

Following on from the success of the Queen of Hoxton’s rooftop cinema during the summer, the trendy venue has gone all out for its outdoor winter entertainment for the second year running with the return of pop up hangout WigWamBam.

It’s a steep climb to the top floor of the Curtain Road nightspot, but it’s well worth the energy and there are all manner of warming winter drinks to quench the thirst you’ve worked up.

You walk straight into the large, warm tipi to find a gigantic Schwenkgrill hanging dramatically from the centre, with chefs slicing up meats, and serving sizzling stews.

Stalls crafted from tree trunks line the edges of the wigwam, where revellers tuck into their food and sip anything from spiced mulled cider, hot buttered rum and hot toddys with whisky or fudge.

There’s also an outdoor bar serving more conventional drinks beside a terrace dotted with outdoor heaters and lanterns to stave off any bitter chills.

But the highlight for me were the fire pits over which we roasted marshmallows for our own S’mores (marshmallows and chocolate, sandwiched between two biscuits.) The only downside to it being that I left smelling like a bonfire – something to bear in mind if you’re planning on heading elsewhere afterwards.

I’m a summer girl at heart, but this unique concept had me happily waving goodbye to the balmy evenings and sun dresses, and embracing all winter with open arms. For one night, at least. And, I will undoubtedly be one of many to call it my new favourite hangout this winter.

WigWamBam, which opened to the public last Friday, will remain in place until the end of March. Seating cannot be reserved but entry is free, and the venue is open between 5 and 10pm Monday to Saturday.
