Many students also scored the top class BTEC grades they needed to get into university.

Rebecca Mendonca, 18, got a 3D* (a triple distinction – equivalent to A B B at A-level) in fine art and will now head to Greenwich University to study media and communications.

She said: “I’m really happy.

“I worked very hard and had a lot of sleepless nights but now I can study what I really want to and see where it takes me.

“My family are so pleased.”

Burhanuddin Yusuf Putra, 18, who’s originally from Indonesia, managed an A* and a B and is now off to Brighton to study architecture.

He said: “These results are better than I hoped for.

“I tried to call my mum and sister but I think they were busy.

“I sent them a text though and the text back saying ‘congratulations, keep believing in yourself’.

“Tonight I am going to meet up with some friends to celebrate.”

Oscar Lawrence Watkins, 18, is an aspiring artists whose triple distinction in Art has won him a place at London Met University.

He said: “My favourite part of the course was doing sculpture, creating figures and heads out of metal.

“It’s made it really hard because although you can do the written work at home, all the course work has to be done at school.

“But I’ve put the work in, especially towards the end - I was really pushing it.

“I am really happy with my results.”

Adrienne Bottomley, deputy head of the school in Highbury Grove, Highbury, said: “They’ve done really, really well, we’re really proud of them, their achievements are amazing.

“We wish them all the best for the future.”
