A Caribbean celebration brought carnival vibes and “sunshine” to a Finsbury Park day centre on Friday.

The Alsen day centre, in Durham Road, which caters to older people with a range of disabilities, put on its 19th Caribbean festival last week.

Some 85 people, including Islington mayor Cllr Dave Poyser, and Jeremy Corbyn, soaked up the event’s carnival music and sampled the “delicious” food on offer.

Lloyd Coombers, 63, who manages the centre, said: “Many of our service users have mobility issues, so it was really great to bring carnival to the community.

“It was great day with traditional music and a party atmosphere which brought a some sunshine into our lives.”

The Whittington Steel Band, a popular Islington group, also attended and performed their hits.

Lloyd said: “Some people who come here are in agony and pain but everyone enjoyed the party. Sometimes having some fun is the best medicine.”
