Anti-terrorism sessions will take place across Islington today as the borough’s police join a London-wide plan to stamp out extremism

Officers from Islington are taking part in Operation Penna – a Scotland Yard scheme to increase awareness of security and counter terrorism policing as well as reminding the public of the vital role they can play in protecting London from danger.

In Islington, officers be will undertake additional patrols around the major transport hubs as well making good use of the borough’s CCTV and automatic number plate recognition technology.

Additional officers and youngsters from the Islington Volunteer Police Cadets will also be on duty at the Arsenal’s match against Fulham the Emirates on Saturday to further raise awareness.

Det Chf Sup Gerry Campbell, Islington’s borough commander, said: “Local officers are an integral part of the way the Met responds to the threat from terrorism whether it is by deterring those who may involved in terrorist activity through visible patrolling and working with and briefing businesses on how to protect their premises from attack.

“Operation Penna builds further on our engagement with communities and businesses in a variety of ways to counter the threat from terrorism and improve the protection offered to local businesses from a terrorist attack.”
