Theories include a Dr Who-style alien invasion, Shia LaBeouf’s European apology tour, or simply a very unfortunate man stuck upside down, but nobody is really sure who the King’s Cross ‘Bucket Man’ is.
A Reddit user posted a picture of the man, his head firmly rammed into a bucket on the station entrance, dressed in a cape with a union jack flag between his feet.
Using the handle ‘kabukisteve’ he asked: “This guy was just outside King’s Cross train station. Can anyone explain?”
Answers ranged from the simple:
“Art”, said kildog. “He’s the bucket man, what other explanation is needed?” added i_stab_trees, with CrazyArtist asking: “Australian?”
To the outlandish:
“He’s a wizard on his way to platform 9 & 3/4 who doesn’t know how to muggle up”, said Harry Potter fan ginga-ninja1993.
“Is it Shia La Bouf’s new apology European tour?” asked JDFreeman, with bloodguard adding: “I’m reasonably sure it has something to do with Doctor Who and some kind of alien invasion. Brace yourselves, Londoners.”
Gay-ben said: “We are no longer the knights who say Ni..”
And some others I didn’t categorise:
ODuffer said: “He’s looking a bit pail.”
IIAOPSW said: “Its clearly a political statement about blind patriotism while having your head in the sand. Or you know, a street performance.”
“How are you supposed to throw pennies in his bucket if his head is in the way,” opined dun_yow_like_soup.
HecticHereticBolton was more sympathetic: “He is stuck, help the poor bastard.”
And clearly mrjonnewman was watching a different version of Star Wars to the rest of us, saying: “Darth Vader fell out of his TIE Fighter.”
UPDATE: Apparently, a ‘Bucket Man’ has been spotted elsewhere, although given the fact his head is in a bucket it is not clear if it is the same one, or if this is some ‘thing’ the rest of us are not aware of.
As well as this video from the Edinburgh Fringe last year, some Redditors said he had been spotted in Camden Town, and the Plymouth Herald reported on a ‘Bucket Man’ last month appearing in the city, reportedly drawing ‘quite a crowd’.
