The firm behind the £400m Islington Square development has announced plans to build a luxury cinema where film fans can have three-course meals delivered directly to their seats.

Work is set to begin on the six-screen, 22,000 sq ft cinema in 2017. The Lounge will be completed by the end of that year, according to Square developers Sager Group.

It will be only the second “fine dining cinema” in Europe to offer viewers exclusive waiter service. As well as food, patrons can order fine wine and cocktails to sip during the film.

Each screening room will offer a maximum of 40 reclining leather seats with double the leg room of normal cinema seats, the firm added.

Sager Group CEO Giris Rabinovitch said: “The Lounge by Odeon is confirmation that our scheme will bring the very best to the local area and our future residents.”

Duncan Reynolds, managing director of Odeon UK, described the planned cinema as “the most innovative and luxurious experience available in cinema today, in one of London’s most sought-after locations”.

He added: “This is a luxurious way of enjoying exciting new films with friends and family, and is the perfect way to make a visit to the cinema extra special, offering all our guests the opportunity to relax and enjoy fine food and drinks in an exclusive environment.”

Fronted by the North London Sorting Centre off Upper Street, the 500,000 sq ft Islington Square development includes plans for 263 homes, 108 serviced flats, shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Described as a “Covent Garden style centre”, it was designed by award-winning architect Piers Gough.
