A 90-year-old man is fighting for his life after a hit-and-run crash involving a moped in Finsbury last night.

Police are now hunting for the rider who drove off with a missing shoe and no helmet after the incident in Central Street, near the junction with Lever Street.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious leg and head injuries after police and medics were called just after 8.50pm. He is in critical condition and his family have been contacted.

The driver of the black moped involved in the collision came off the moped in the crash but managed to get back on and ride off on the damaged vehicle.

Their red open-faced crash helmet was left at the scene and officers from the serious collision investigation unit are now trying to track them down.

Det Sgt Matt Smith from the Met’s transport unit, said: “I have no doubt someone in the area would have seen a moped driver fleeing the scene without a helmet and missing a shoe. It would have come across as very peculiar and it’s not something you would forget in a hurry.

“We need anyone with any information to contact us as soon as possible. No one of any age, especially 90 deserves to be a victim of a hit and run collision.

“I’m sure acquaintances, family, friends or neighbours of the rider involved, given the release of this new appeal, have knowledge or suspicion about the rider’s involvement and I would appeal to their conscience to contact police given the age of the victim.”

Any witnesses and those with information can call police on 0208 991 9555 or Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111. Twitter users can also tweet @MetCC.
