TWO gangsters who exchanged gunfire in a wild west-style shootout on the Islington-Hackney border have been jailed indefinitely.

Sina Naroei

Sina Naroei, 24, of the Southgate Road area of Islington, and Ozgur Ozdemir, 22, of Clapton, started shooting at each other in busy Kingsland Road, Dalston, on April 14 this year.

Ozdemir was knocked off the motorbike on which he was riding pillion and ran into a shop to continue shooting at Naroei, who was in the street with a group of men.

Miraculously no members of the public were injured, but the 21-year-old motorbike rider who was carrying Ozdemir received a gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to hospital but discharged the next day.

The shoot-out was witnessed by detectives from Operation Trident, the Metropolitan Police’s black on black gun crime unit, who were investigating the shooting of schoolgirl Agnes Sina-inakoju in a Hoxton chicken take-away restaurant a few hours earlier.

The officers recognised Naroei despite attempts to hide his face with a scarf.

Yesterday (23) at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Naroei, of the “Holly Street Boys” was given an indeterminate sentence with a minimum of seven-and-a-half years after he was convicted of possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Ozdemir, of the “A Road Gang”, was also jailed indefinitely, but will be eligible for parole after four-and-a-half years because he pleaded guilty to the same charges.

Detective Constable Neil Whitbread, from Operation Trident, said: “The judge recognised that this was part of a gang conflict and that both men had gone on the streets armed, showing no regard for the safety of the public, and this has been reflected in the sentences.

“These are two people who were known gang members for several years and we are happy that the streets are a safer place with them in prison.

He added: “This was a reckless act played out between two rivals in a busy street.

“Shots were fired by both parties with no thought to the risk they posed to innocent members of the public, who unbelievably were not injured.

“Operation Trident is committed to taking men of violence off the streets. Working with the community, we will continue to work tirelessly in order to bring the perpetrators of such crimes to justice.”
