Holloway police station will shut by the end of the year, City Hall confirmed this morning.

As previously reported in the Gazette in July, the Hornsey Road building was facing closure as a result of cost-cutting by mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

He said the decision has been forced by government funding cuts to the Met, and will see 37 other police stations close across the capital. The mayor’s office has justified Holloway’s closure by claiming only 1.1 crimes a day were being recorded at the part-time front counter.

It leaves Islington with one remaining police station – in Tolpuddle Street.

Islington Council will now have its eyes on the land to build up to 43 affordable homes.

When the plans were announced in July, community safety leader Cllr Andy Hull said that while the town hall didn’t want the station to shut, it had already opened talks with City Hall to get to the “front of the queue” and stop private developers buying the plot.
