A man who embarked on a campaign of raping and robbing prostitutes in Haringey parks has been jailed for a total of 17 years.
Florin Cozma, 46, preyed on vulnerable women, most of whom were sex workers, taking them to isolated parts of Haringey parks and violently attacking them.
One sex worker, refusing to participate in sexual activity, was raped twice by Cozma before being robbed. Two other sex workers were robbed and physically assaulted. Another woman was taken to a park where Cozma attempted to rape her, but she managed to fight him off.
Despite his DNA being present on two of the victims, the Romanian national was not on police records, and worldwide enquiries also turned up nothing.
A specialist Met Police team undertook extensive enquiries using CCTV and car numberplate recognition technology to establish potential vehicles that were involved, and officers spoke to sex workers in the Haringey area.
Once they had identified Cozma he was arrested at his home address in Taylor Close, Holloway.
He was yesterday sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court to a total of 17 years for two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and three counts of robbery.
Judge Witold Pawlak commended the officer in the case, Det Con Anthony Shaw, for his professionalism, investigative ability and hard work during the investigation and subsequent trial.
Det Con Shaw said: “This investigation involved a dangerous individual who preyed on vulnerable lone women in the Haringey area. His successful conviction sends out a message that the police will work tirelessly to protect the public from those who feel they are above the law and show no respect for others.”
Det Ch Insp Adam Lowe, from the Met’s Serious and Complex Case Team, said: “Cozma did not show any of his victims empathy or compassion. A dangerous individual has been removed from the streets of London due to the hard work of officers from the Met’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.”
