Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn says he will be “proud” to speak at Finsbury Park Mosque’s anti-hate crime meeting on Tuesday – as today marks one year since it was nearly blown up in an arson attack.

A jerrycan full of petrol was launched into the mosque compound, but failed to set alight. The perpetrator has never been caught.

Speaking to the Gazette, Labour Party leader Mr Corbyn said: “We came together to support our mosque at a rally after the attack, and we will do the same again on Tuesday. I will be proud to be there.

“Finsbury Park Mosque is an important part of our community, and well done to the leader [Mohammed Kozbar] for always reaching out to that community.

“I remember when it happened – I was horrified when I heard. I phoned Mohammed immediately and the only good thing about this was that the device didn’t explode. If it had, the consequences would have been horrific.”

Tuesday’s public meeting at the mosque, in St Thomas’s Road, runs from 6.30pm until 8.30pm. See events.islington.gov.uk/events/islington-together-aganist-hate-crime-5301.aspx for more information.
