Robbery offences increased by 73 per cent in Islington in the past year, new figures show.

The stats, recorded between June 1, 2017 and May 31 this year, show how robberies leapt by 821 offences: from 1,123 in 2016/17 to 1,944.

A report will be presented to Islington Council’s policy and performance scrutiny committee on June 25.

More encouragingly, knife crime offences causing injury dropped by 13 pc, from 80 in 2016/17 to 69 in the past year. However, overall knife crime offences, which includes crimes such as possession, increased 46 pc, from 447 to 652.

Islington, of course, continues to post prolific numbers for theft snatch offences, as moped crooks continue to roam our streets. There were 5,145 in the past year, with Islington ranking second in the entire capital. It’s a slight reduction on 5,252 in 2016/17.

There has also been a 41 pc increase in faith hate crime offences, from 76 to 107.
