A spokesman for the Met said officers were called at 10am to St John Street at the junction with Wyclif Street, Clerkenwell, following reports of shots being fired.

He said specialist firearms units and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene.

“A man aged in his early 50s has been taken to hospital suffering from a gunshot wound,” he added.

“His condition is described as serious but stable.”

The Met’s Trident Gang Crime Command has been informed of the incident, but police said enquiries continue and so far no arrests have been made.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact officers via 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
