A two-minute online alcohol test has been launched to help curb Islington’s chronic alcohol problem.

The Don’t bottle It Up site asks users how much they drink and how often, then gives them a rating from low risk to high risk of harm.

The test was launched after an NHS report said up to one in 20 deaths could be linked to the bottle in Islington, which also has London’s highest liver disease death rate and highest rate of alcohol-specific death in men.

It’s thought that 30 per cent of drinkers consume alcohol at high risk levels – potentially leading to cancer and heart disease.

Charlotte Ashton, assistant director of public health for Islington, said: “Many drinking more than the recommended daily amount do not realise this could be putting their health at risk.

“We want to make sure people know what they are drinking and the effects this could have, so that they can make informed decisions, and make sure help and support is easy to access.”

The recommended alcohol limits are three to four units a day for men and two to three units for women.
