Officers cordoned off the nature trail between Upper Tollington Park and Stapleton Hall Road, Stroud Green, shortly after the attack at about 12.30am on Sunday.

The victim was treated at the Whittington Hospital and was discharged shortly after. She is receiving ongoing specialist support from police.

Police have a detailed description of the suspect, who is known to have been in the area of Victoria Road and Upper Tollington Park shortly before the attack, drinking a can of Stella Artois lager and smoking what is belived to be a Kent brand cigarette, which is completely white.

He is about 5ft 5ins tall, of Mediterranean appearance and was wearing dark clothing.

Det Insp Simon Dobinson, of the sex offences specialist Sapphire unit, said: “I would appeal to anyone who recognises the description of the suspect to contact us.

“The combination of the suspect drinking Stella lager in this area, and our belief that he was smoking an uncommon brand of cigarette, may assist in someone identifying this person.

“Any information will be treated in the strictest confidence and we will be able to eliminate any innocent names put forward very quickly.

“Stranger rapes of this kind are extremely rare in London but we remind people to be aware of their personal safety and their surroundings, particularly if they are alone.”
