Clowns gather at the annual Clowns' Church Service for the memory of English actor Joseph Grimaldi at Dalston's Holy Trinity Church.

An agreement which will allow clowns to remain at their home in a Dalston church has been met, the Gazette understands.

Clowns International and Holy Trinity Church in Beechwood Road remained tight-lipped over the matter this week, but it is thought that a deal has been reached.

In April, the clown museum within the church was at risk as the space was needed to house temporary classrooms for Holy Trinity Primary School, which is opposite, while it is redeveloped.

The move would have put the popular annual clown service at the church in jeopardy.

The event celebrates the life of the father of modern clowning, Regency actor and musician Joseph Grimaldi, who died in 1837, and candles are lit for other deceased clowns.

Mr Grimaldi, who started out treading the boards at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, lived in Islington and died in 1837.

Clowns International and Holy Trinity Church declined to comment.
