Karl Aaron Maddix, 31, of no fixed address, appeared at Wood Green Crown Court today over the crash, which occured shortly before 2am on March 29 last year at the junction of Seven Sisters Road and St Ann’s Road, Tottenham.

He sped off in the opposite direction when he passed a patrol car in Islington. When officers finally located him again, several hundred metres away, they tried to catch him up but Maddix ran a red light.

A short time later he clipped a white van and hit the bridge at the junction. Maddix ran from the car, leaving his severely injured passengers - Shaka Henry, 33, and Gregory Jones, 38, both of Islington - to die at the scene, despite the efforts of police and paramedics.

Maddix today admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. Two further counts of causing death whilst uninsured, and two counts of causing death whilst driving without a licence, were allowed to lie on file. He will be sentenced on March 6.
