A group of young volunteers gave up their Saturday to ensure the streets around Finsbury Park station were litter free.

The volunteers, from the UCKG HelpCentre’s Victory Youth Group, based at the nearby Rainbow Theatre, in Seven Sisters Road, were helping out Islington Council as part of the church-run group’s community outreach initiative.

Eight were put to work collecting 32 bags of rubbish from the side roads and nearby estate land, while the rest helped deliver more than 600 leaflets to flats above shops on the main roads regarding refuse collection times.

Sally Burke, of Islington’s operations team, was delighted with their efforts - describing the group as “young, dynamic and professional”.

She added: “The young people were great, they’re all enthusiastic; they were taking it seriously and respect authority.”

Local resident Paulo Rennan was also impressed.

“Youths today are always busy, they are closed off and in their own world… want no responsibility, but these young people are doing something different,” he said.

Volunteer Micael Lima, 23, acknowledged it was “a new experience”.

“I have never done this before and I enjoyed myself learning to give more to my community by disposing of my litter in the right way.”
