Students and staff at Islington’s Sixth Form Consortium (IC6) have achieved a 99 per cent pass rate in A-levels for the third year running.

The consortium – made up of Central Foundation Boys’ School, Highbury Fields, St Aloysius College and Highbury Grove schools – saw 67 per cent of exam entries graded A* to C, while 41 per cent were granted A* to B grades.

And this afternoon, Islington Council leader, Cllr Catherine West, has congratulated the students on another bumper year of results.

She said: “Congratulations to all Islington students and staff who worked so hard to achieve these A-level results.

“We want all young people in Islington to have the chance to fulfil their potential. IC6, City and Islington College and the borough’s academy sixth form facilities are providing excellent opportunities for school leavers, making sure they are well prepared for higher education or to enter the world of work.”

John O’Shea, director of IC6, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be maintaining our excellent results. We made a tremendous step forward two years ago and to repeat this – and our ‘oustanding’ Ofsted judgement for a third year running – whilst increasing our student numbers so significantly is an amazing achievement. IC6’s results demonstrate the hard work of our staff and the quality of our support systems.”

Each of the schools in the consortium has individually achieved a 98 per cent or higher pass rate.

Highbury Grove pupil Daniel Luby, 19, got three As in economic, politics and English language and literature and is now going to Durham University to study philosophy. He said: “I got in my first choice university which is amazing. My family is thrilled.”

Fellow pupil Lauren Price, 18, got an A* in economics, a B in maths and a B in English literature and language and is set to study economics at Queen Mary, University of London. She said: “My mum was screaming down the phone at me she was so happy. There is a big party tonight where we are all going to celebrate.”

St Mary Magdalene Academy in Holloway also recently celebrated its examination results for sixth-form students studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD). Their overall pass rate was 92 per cent, compared to 78 per cent nationally for the IBD.

Top student Daniel Bergicourt, achieved an incredible 43 points out of a maximum of 45, the equivalent of five A* passes at A-level.

Islington’s Information, Advice and Guidance team is on hand to help students who want to discuss their next steps. More details can be found at www.islington.gov.uk/connexions or by calling 020 7527 7031.
