A new exhibition starting in Islington next week claims TV star Jimmy Savile is innocent until proven guilty.

The free show, which opens at the Bread and Butter Gallery in Upper Street next Wednesday, will feature collages of news articles about Mr Savile in recent weeks. Publicity includes a mock statement from the former Jim’ll Fix It star, which says: “Now then, now then, now then, I’ve been named a child abuser, how’s about that then?”

The TV personality, who died in 2011, has been the subject of a glut of child abuse allegations since a documentary investigating his backstage activity was aired earlier this month.

Police are now looking into sexual abuse claims all the way back to 1959, but organisers of the exhibition insist he is innocent until proved guilty in a court.

Curator David West said: “Things have gone a bit mad – everyone speaking up with no great evidence. It’s trial by media. Some famous people are saying they knew about it all along. Why not speak up at the time? He wasn’t so influential that he could stop all these people talking. We are not making light of it – but it’s a circus.”

Mr West says the exhibition, which runs until October 26, will evolve as different artists participate. For information, visit www.breadandbutterarts.co.uk.
