Temporary classrooms have been approved for the opening of a new free school.

An application was submitted in May to Islington and Harringey councils to install “three single storey modular buildings” with adjoining canopy that will be occupied by up to 56 children at Whitehall Park School in Hornsey Lane.

The classrooms will be at the site of the former Ashmount Primary School until building work on the school building, expected to cost the government £10million, is finished in 2017.

It is yet to be decided whether Islington Council will use half of the site to build affordable housing.

Laura Birkett, headteacher at the new school, says: “We had every confidence that the plans would be approved and have been working hard in the background finalising the detail of the high-quality temporary buildings and outdoor learning area which will accommodate our reception pupils during our opening year.

“We’ll have everything in place to provide our pupils with a stimulating, safe and welcoming environment from September 3 and we look forward to sharing more details with everyone shortly.”
