The director of a family-run car spares shop claims Transport for London is driving away business by repeatedly slapping parking fines on his customers.

Jonathan Selby, 40, who runs the long-standing Autoparts store in Holloway Road, Holloway, says he has received dozens of phonecalls from angry customers and delivery drivers ticketed in recent weeks. There have been two CCTV cameras near the loading bay outside the shop for about five years, but the father-of-two says only recently has TfL “upped the ante” and begun firing off the £60 fines at an alarming rate.

He said: “They have been ticketing every one of our customers and it’s just a bit of a joke. TfL are just trying to make money. If it carries on like this, we’re not going to be here for much longer.”

The shop was started by Mr Selby’s father and his uncle in 1972. It has relied on drivers being allowed to park briefly and buy goods for years, and Mr Selby feels this should count as “loading”.

“The cameras have been in place for years but something has obviously changed,” he added. “I have been phoned at least a dozen times in the last week, and every person who gets a ticket is a lost customer. People have got to be allowed to stop and buy stuff – it should just be 20 minutes parking if that doesn’t count as loading.”

TFl’s Paul Cowperthwaite, said: “Penalty charge notices are only issued when a vehicle is observed to be parked in the loading bay and is not being loaded or unloaded. We are always happy to listen to representations from local businesses about parking restrictions.”
