About 6,000 people enjoyed a carnival atmosphere on Sunday when a festival celebrated the people, history and creativity of Caledonian Road.

The Cally Festival, now in its second year, featured more than 150 pitches showcasing local produce, crafts and community groups. It lined a 300-metre stretch of the Islington road that was closed off to traffic.

Performers on three stages also entertained the crowds, as did the Cally’s Got Talent competition which was won by a nine-year-old girl called Megan who sang a song she had written the previous day.

The event was set up last year by community group Team Cally and producer Anya Johnson with support from Islington Council and various sponsors as a way of celebrating the road’s past, present and future, as well as the talents of the many people who live there.

Ms Johnson said: “The festival was the same size as last year, but it was richer in its content. The first year was about getting it off the ground and showcasing an example of what can be achieved, and this year it was about accommodating everybody who wanted to get involved.

“I think the highlight this year was people knowing about the festival before it happened and the sense of progression. People were really understanding and believing in the idea, and there was that feeling that everybody had come together.

“It was described as more like a carnival, as it felt like it had been happening for 10 years or so.”
