A garden where human remains are allegedly buried is being excavated by police this morning.

Specialist teams have began a forensic search of the land to the rear of a property in Searle Place, Finsbury Park, as part of an on-going investigation.

Detectives said information received in July last year contained allegations dating back about 30 years that human remains are buried in the garden.

The claims do not relate to the current occupiers of the address and is not connected to other investigations or operations, police stressed.

Islington Borough Commander Gerry Campbell said: “Detectives in Islington have carried out a thorough investigation in order to corroborate the allegations made.

“After examining all the information the investigation has produced and with careful consideration, I have made the decision that it is appropriate to excavate the garden.

“Until the conclusion of the search it would be inappropriate of me to comment further”.

It is not known at this stage exactly how long the excavation will take but this will be reviewed on a daily basis.
