Animal rescue and flood call-outs also down

Fires have dropped by 16 per cent in Islington during the past five years.

Figures released by London Fire Brigade (LFB) show there were 584 blazes in the borough, around 11 a week, compared to 696 in 2010/11.

Other stats show calls outs by special services - flooding, animal rescues and road traffic collisions - and false alarms have also fallen by 15 per cent.

Pat Goulbourne, LFB’s Borough Commander for Islington, said: “The figures are a credit to firefighters, fire engineers, fire investigators, community safety specialists and many other staff who have made huge progress in educating people about the importance of fire safety.

“We have worked incredibly hard with our partners in the borough to work on reducing the number of fires we attend and will continue to target those most at risk to prevent deaths and serious injuries.”
