A new free school planned for a controversial Hornsey Rise building has appointed its first headteacher.
Whitehall Park School, set to launch in September, potentially on the former Ashmount primary site in Ashmount Road, has employed Samantha Habgood.
She will see the school through its pre-opening stages until it appoints a headteacher proper.
The future of the site has been the subject of a bitter dispute since the Ashmount School announced its decision to move to new £16.5million premises which opened at the start of the year.
Islington Council wants to bulldoze the old school and sell the site for housing, while people in the area want to save the 1960s building and say the neighbourhood is already overcrowded.
The final say is now with Education Secretary Michael Gove, who could seize the site over using the contentious new powers of the Education Act 2011.
