Students at Central Foundation Boys’ School have topped last year’s remarkable results with 84 per cent of pupils at the school achieving five A* to C grades with maths and English.

Last year the school became the first in the borough to hit 80 per cent but have managed to set the bar even higher this time around, despite the government making things harder for students.

There was also a huge rise in the number of students who gained five A* or A grades with 30 per cent of boys achieving the feat, up from 12 per cent last time around.

Outstanding performers at the school included Samuel Price who scored a perfect 11 A*s, Omar Adam and Taief Miah who both bagged 10 A*s and two As and Apollinaire Lalouschek and Rayid Reza who chalked up nine A*s and three As a piece.

Jamie Brownhill, headteacher at the school, said: “For us it’s about doing the small things well and creating a calm and focussed atmosphere.

“We’ve instilled real aspirations in the students to do well, through our connections with the city and looking up to our inspirational sixth form.

“The students know that if they want to go on to the very best universities then these results really count and can stand you in good stead,

“We had four applications to Oxford and Cambridge this year from our sixth form, unfortunately they were unsuccessful but that number is going to keep continue to go up when you have students like Sam Price getting 11 A*s”

As well as 92 per cent of students bagging a C or better in maths, the school also had stand out results in more peripheral subjects like drama in which 63 per cent of students got an A grade or higher with none scoring lower than a C.

“We’ve always had a very traditional curriculum, so I knew we would be ready for the brave new world that Mr Gove brought in.

“But we also provide a broad education, the students also experience all of the curriculum and they can then make those decisions as to where their passions lie.”
