London Fire Brigade crews are on standby and cops have cordoned off 25 metres of the famous street.

David Twydell, a long-standing trader who runs a fruit and veg stall, told the Gazette a gas main was damaged at The Perfume Shop, towards the Liverpool Road end of the market.

He said: “They are having it refurbished and someone went through the gas pipe. The majority of the market and shops have been shut down. Everyone is congregating on both ends of the street.”

Overall, 150 people have been evacuated, with no injuries reported as engineers deal with the issue.

The fire brigade was called at 9.10am. Two crews, from Upper Street and Euston fire stations, are at the scene.

Update, 1pm: the gas main has been repaired and Chapel Market is back open.
