The chief executive of the Whittington Hospital is to stand down at the end of this month.
Dr Yi Mien Koh believes she has taken Whittington Health, the trust that runs the hospital, as far as she can and is looking at a number of opportunities, the hospital told staff today.
She was appointed as chief executive in March 2011 and has been at the helm during a troubled period for the Whittington.
Last year hospital chiefs were forced to back track on plans to sell off buildings at the hospital’s site in Magdala Avenue, Archway.
The plan, known as the estates strategy, caused public outrage and campaigners marched in their thousands last March to oppose the sell off before hospital chiefs abandoned the bid.
Dr Koh said: “I have had three very happy years at Whittington Health. However, I feel that I have taken the trust as far as I can.
“Whittington Health needs someone to take the trust forward on its journey to [become a] foundation trust.
“I have had a number of approaches and I am looking forward to the challenges the opportunities may present.
“I would like to thank all of our hard working staff for always putting patients and service users first.
“It has been an honour to lead such a dedicated and passionate group of people whose enthusiasm and care have encouraged and inspired me every day.
“I will miss working with many great colleagues and would like to wish the trust well for its future.”
Whittington Health chairmain Steve Hitchins said: “I would like to thank Yi Mien for her hard work, energy and expertise in taking the organisation forward as an integrated care organisation.
“Much progress has been made in coordinating our services with the community and social care.
“I wish her every success in the future.”
Simon Pleydell, a former chief executive at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will take over as interim chief executive on April 1 while Dr Koh’s successor is recruited.
He was chief executive at South Tees for nine years until 2012 and led the trust through financial turnaround to achieve foundation trust status.
Most recently, he has been working at the NHS Confederation as an associate director leading innovation, improvement and change policy.
