Pakeman primary school pupils test out the new courts

Twenty potential Wimbledon stars of the future gathered at Rosemary Gardens tennis courts this week to mark the site’s rejuvenation.

With Andy Murray and co in action in the country’s biggest tennis competition, students from Pakeman Primary School in Holloway visited the newly refurbished courts for a tennis masterclass from coaches from the Islington Tennis Centre.

The improved courts have new tarmac surfaces and a practice feature somewhat reminiscent of squash courts – a specially designed “rebound wall” against which players can sharpen their shots and serves.

The works took 12 weeks to complete and cost £36,000.

And the new courts have inspired some of the children. Pupil Arthur Lazovskis, 10, said: “I am going to start playing more tennis and eat more vegetables.”
