A call to arms has been made to older gentleman to stand up for rights of pensioners in the borough.

Someone is needed to fill one of two Islington Older Peoples’ Champions roles – and the town hall want applicants to name one thing they would change to make pensioners lives better.

There are more than 17,500 pensioners in Islington which make up nine per cent of the population.

Cllr Janet Burgess, Islington Council’s executive member for health and wellbeing said: “Our Older Peoples’ Champions have been invaluable in giving older people a voice and shining the spotlight on a spectrum of issues from home care to hospital standards.

“Their evidence has informed debate and influenced our policy on prioritising frontline services for the most vulnerable in the face of government cuts.

“That’s why we are asking candidates to tell us the one thing they would like to see change in Islington to help older people.

“I want to thank Virginia [Lowe, incumbent] for the excellent service she has given and look forward to welcoming her successor in 2013.”
