Former Gunners skipper and long-serving England left-back Sansom was rushed to the Whittington Hospital after the health scare in Holloway Road, Holloway.

Sansom, 54, who still has close ties with the club and leads tours of the Emirates Stadium, collapsed outside Arsenal-themed pie shop Piebury Corner at around 12.30pm.

He has now been discharged from hospital and is doing well, according to sources at the football club.

Paul Campbell, who runs Piebury Corner with wife Nicky, said: “We’re over the moon that he’s doing well. We’re glad he’s home and we look forward to seeing him come in to get the pie he never got.”

Hundreds of Arsenal fans and well-wishers had taken to Twitter to wish him a speedy recovery today. Sansom played for the Gunners between 1980 and 1988 and earned 86 England caps in an international career spanning 1979 to 1988.

He lifted the league cup as Arsenal captain in 1987.
