A shortlist of 10 nominees has been drawn up, compiled from public suggestions, and they include a boxer, Olympian fencer, and a social campaigner.

Islington Council’s plaque scheme, running for three years, aims to recognise major figures and milestones in Islington’s history.

Cllr Catherine West, leader of the council, said: “Once again, this year’s shortlist represents Islington’s rich history, where so many people, places and events made a big impact on the borough and often further afield as well.

“It’s up to our residents to decide which three from this list they would like to see honoured with a permanent memorial in their community.”

Previous winners include Mary Wollstonecraft, an early feminist, and the Keskidee Centre, Britain’s first arts and cultural centre for the black community.

For the list of nominees visit: www.islington.gov.uk/plaques, where votes can be placed online or fill in a form in local libraries, or the Local History Centre in Finsbury Library. Voting closes on April 8.
