Neighbours were trying to ban music shows in Finsbury Park, claiming recent events had ruined their summer.

They complained about blaring music and concert-goers’ anti-social behaviour in residential streets.

One neighbour said: “It is unreasonable to expect people who have been working all week to put up with this senseless noise at the weekends.”

They began a campaign to stop Haringey Council, which ran the park, allowing similar events in the future.

Thirty years on, the homeowners of Finsbury Park are still complaining about exactly the same thing.

Meanwhile, an MI5 officer’s autobiography – which had been banned by the government – was also banned by Islington Council.

Islington South and Finsbury MP Chris Smith offered to make his copy of Peter Wright’s Spycatcher available in libraries.

He said: “I want my constituents to be able to see and read this book.” But town hall lawyers instructed the council not to accept his gift.
