Policemen were called “angels” by a 75-year-old woman accused of being drunk in Seven Sisters Road.

Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court heard Beatrice Telford was picked up by a cop after being found “sitting helpless” against a wall.

She had drunk too much whisky while visiting friends. Magistrate Frank Milton gave her a discharge.

On leaving the court, Ms Telford, of Tompion Street, Finsbury, said: “I must thank this beautiful man for having saved my life. God bless him! We have some wonderful policemen. God bless them all! They are all angels.”

Meanwhile, a Canonbury woman was caught nicking goods at Anthony Jackson’s, a self-service grocery shop in Chapel Market.

Emma Gray, 40, of St Mary’s Grove, pleaded guilty to theft at Clerkenwell Magistrates’ Court, and magistrate Edward Robey said: “I want you to pay it out of your own money. Don’t let your husband suffer for it.”
