A Holloway tenant managed to get a reduction of her “absolutely shocking” rent at a tribunal.

C. Gill was paying £4 and 10 shillings a week for her two-bed flat in Camden Dwellings, York Way.

The property was riddled with damp and rent was reduced to 24 shillings at the Islington Rent Tribunal.

Chairman Harry Samuels said: “This is an absolutely shocking rent. It’s the rent of a decent flat in the West End, but this is a slum property furnished with junk. It is only a comment on the present housing situation that people will still pay it.”

Meanwhile, part of what would become the Bemerton Estate was approved by planners.

London County Council accepted plans for a 10-storey block in Bemerton Street and two four-storey blocks in Bingfield Street, both off Caledonian Road.

The cost of the development, which would create 229 homes, was estimated at £672,000 (equivalent of £15million today).
